Generating electricity while walking with loads.

چکیده
We have developed the suspended-load backpack, which converts mechanical energy from the vertical movement of carried loads (weighing 20 to 38 kilograms) to electricity during normal walking [generating up to 7.4 watts, or a 300-fold increase over previous shoe devices (20 milliwatts)]. Unexpectedly, little extra metabolic energy (as compared to that expended carrying a rigid backpack) is required during electricity generation. This is probably due to a compensatory change in gait or loading regime, which reduces the metabolic power required for walking. This electricity generation can help give field scientists, explorers, and disaster-relief workers freedom from the heavy weight of replacement batteries and thereby extend their ability to operate in remote areas.

Generating Electricity during Walking with a Lower Limb-Driven Energy Harvester: Targeting a Minimum User Effort
BACKGROUND Much research in the field of energy harvesting has sought to develop devices capable of generating electricity during daily activities with minimum user effort. No previous study has considered the metabolic cost of carrying the harvester when determining the energetic effects it has on the user. When considering device carrying costs, no energy harvester to date has demonstrated th...
متن کاملElectricity Procurement for Large Consumers with Second Order Stochastic Dominance Constraints
This paper presents a decision making approach for mid-term scheduling of large industrial consumers based on the recently introduced class of Stochastic Dominance (SD)- constrained stochastic programming. In this study, the electricity price in the pool as well as the rate of availability (unavailability) of the generating unit (forced outage rate) is considered as uncertain parameters. Th...
متن کاملRelationship among gait parameters while walking with varying loads Running Head: Gait while walking with varying loads
This study aimed to clarify the relationships between loads and gait changes and among gait parameters while walking with various loads. Fifteen healthy young male adults (mean age: 22.1±1.6 years) walked with four kinds of loads based on each subject’s body mass (0, 20, 40, and 60% of body mass: BM) on his back. Walking speed, cadence, stance time, swing time, double support time, step length,...
متن کاملEffect of Different Cognitive Loads on Gait Stability in Younger and Older Adults
Purpose: As many older people fall during dual tasks, we aimed to examine the effect of different cognitive loads on learning gait stability in younger and older adults. Methods: 10 younger (Mean±SD age: 25.91±3.42 years) and 10 older adults (Mean±SD: 66.65±4.28 years) were healthy volunteers without a history of falls. They were asked to do three tasks on a treadmill with cognitive load (none...
